The German Karabiner 98AZ was a shortened version of the Gewehr 98 infantry rifle. It was issued to cavalry, signals, cyclist, artillery and machine-gun troops. The K98AZ was more of a short rifle than a true carbine, having been designed after it had been discovered that carbines suffered from excessive muzzle-blast and recoil when using the powerful S-Patrone ammunition adopted by Germany in 1904. Photographic evidence suggests that the increasing numbers of K98AZ found their way into the hands of the infantry as the war progressed. Undoubtedly it was a handier weapon in the trenches than the full-length Gewehr 98.
